The essay is written under examination conditions and is externally assessed by the IB.

      Goal:
To deliver a coherent and structured comparative essay that evaluates the similarities and differences between two or more works studied in part 3. The essay must focus on how the authors of the works under consideration use the conventions of the selected genre to create meaning.

      Assessment:
A combined mark out of 25 to be awarded for the essay, based on five assessment criteria.

      Process:
The length of the HL exam is two hours/SL 1is 1/2 hours
    • Paper 2 contains three essay questions for each literary genre represented on the PLA.
    • Students need to know the 3/4 plays really well for the final exam to be able to score highly in this paper.
    • Students answer one essay question only.
    • Handwriting and presentation is important. It should be at least legible.
    • Students need to answer the question asked and not bend a pre-prepared essay to the exam question.
    • Rather you must draw on your study to answer the question on the paper.
    • Each question directs students to explore the ways in which content is delivered through the conventions of the selected genre.
    • Students are required to compare and contrast the similarities and differences between at least two of the works studied in part 3 of the course.
    • Students should explore and discuss the heart of the question.
    • The essay must go beyond a compare and contrast type question.
    • It must include an argument about the similarities and differences and some evaluation of their significance.
